A Lesson on Self Control

Proverbs 25:28

He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.

A Lesson On Self-Control

I have a friend in California. We email, text, or talk almost everyday. During one of our conversations, the subject of “Our Spirit”, was brought up. Between us we have health, financial, relationship, ministry, and job issues. It seems we both are going through a massive season of the dreaded “C” word, CHANGE!

Women tend to NOT like change. Unless we initiate the change that is. We like to plan our work, and work our plan. We enjoy the comfort and security of  ‘sameness’. Same job, same husband, same kids, same house…. You know what I mean…….

My friend and I agree that we have no control over 99.9% of the issues in our lives. She can’t control her job situation. I can’t control my health. She can’t control a relationship issue, I can’t control what my family does or does not do. But we do have 100% control over “Our Spirit”. Instead of focusing and fretting over the oodles of situations we can not change, we decided to take control of our attitudes and put our energies toward this.

Guess what? Our situations have not change one iota. Our perspective of these situations have changed greatly. Our joy is intact, our walk with God is enhanced, and our influence is expanding. All because we are choosing to zero in on the aspect of our lives we can do something about.

Note: Attitude, Self-Control, Temperance, and Ruling Our Spirit; are all the same concept. In the Bible, the same word is used for all of these.

~ RULING YOUR SPIRIT KEEPS YOU SAFE

As a city without walls is exposed to every assault of the enemy, so a person without temperance is open to every assault of your spiritual enemy.

Are you filled with stress, worry, anger, drama, emotions and hormones?

Do a spirit check. Is your family falling apart? Work on attitudes. Problems with a relationship? Reign in your emotions. Why? Because your lack of control will hurt YOU. You will be open to every trick the devil has, every temptation know to man, and every aggravation ever thought of! By not ruling your spirit, you will actually be making the situation ten times worse!!!! YIKESL

~ RULING YOUR SPIRIT SHOWS YOUR MATURITY

The more temperate, the more spiritual maturity.

Immature Christians are affected negatively by what others say and do.

Mature Christians influence others for Christ by what they say and do.

Immature Christians let their emotions, anger, and feelings run rampant. (and then are sorry later)

Mature Christians have already put their spirit in check BEFORE situations arise

ACT DON’T REACT!

Our spirit is babyish and wants to be 100% in comfort in all areas every second of every day!

We are raising children who have no control over their bodies, thoughts or t spirits. Thus we have children who are on the path to a train wreck! And we are on the rails with them!

Do you have ‘triggers”? Things that just drive you to the cliffs of insanity?? Look at it from this angle: you actually have areas of your life where you have NO self control, no ruling of your spirit, no temperance. OUCH!

~ RULING YOUR SPIRIT TAKES TIME AND EFFORT

It does not come naturally to anyone.

It is the last fruit of the spirit

Galatians 5:23

Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

I believe it is mentioned last because there is a great truth there. This attribute takes time to develop.  It does not come over night. It comes after many times “loosing it” and learning our lesson the hard way. A situation is never helped when we have no control.

Temperance is also mentioned in Titus 1

Titus 1:8

But a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy,

temperate;

This section of the Bible gives instructions on Christian behavior.

~ RULING YOUR SPIRIT TAKE THE FOCUS OFF ISSUES YOU CAN’T RULE

My friend has zero control over her job situation. But how she is accepting the problems. The joy, the peace, the positive spirit she has is very inspiring to me personally. Her testimony over how she faces multiple situations has influenced how I am attempting to face some situations in my life.

You can’t rule your husband, children, boss, friends, foes, weather, prices, illness, taxes or God.

You can rule how you face these events in your life.

~RULING YOUR SPIRIT MAKES MORE ROOM FOR THE HOLY SPIRT TO WORK IN YOUR LIFE.

When your spirit is all crazy and flying around, God’s Spirit hides in the corner waiting for things to settle down. Then the voice of reason can be heard and you apologize. It would be much better to reign in your spirit and attitude, thus giving the Holy Sprit the room to lead, guide and direct you.

My sincere pray would be that ladies would spend their energy and effort on the area of controlling their spirit. It is honestly the only area you total control over. Proverbs 16:32  He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city. Be better than the mighty. You Go Girl!
