Women of the Bible - Eve
from March 17, 2013
Think about all the “firsts” that Eve experienced by being the first woman created. Pregnancy, childbirth, newborn, the loss of her child, no support system around her to help explain things to her. It is surmised that she lived a very long time so she probably could have had hundreds of children!
First mentioned in Gen 1:27 as “female” So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. Gen 1:28 tells us what God gave “them.” And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth. God originally called them both “Adam” - from God. Adam is the one who called her “woman” - she man (Gen 2:23). And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. After the fall her name is changed to “Eve”-the mother of all living. (Gen 3:20) And Adam called his wife’s name Eve; because she was the mother of all living.
Before the fall, Adam and Eve were equal. God gave them both the same in Gen 1:28. Gen 2:23 is the first recorded words of Adam and it is a love poem about Eve. And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. 24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. If we as women would just accomplish this love poem of Adam’s we wouldn’t have any problems in our marriage. Treat one another as one and treat each other as you want to be treated.
-sorrow in conception and birth
-son murdered other son
-moved to a new home
-relationship with God was hurt
-grandson Enos walked with God and “was not because God took him.”
Gen 3:1-5 the serpent talked to her. She doesn’t act like there’s anything wrong with talking to the animals. Did all the animals talk? God didn’t warn them to not talk to the animals.
Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? 2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: 3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. 4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: 5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. Then Eve started doing what still gets us women today....she started thinking! Instead of taking God at His word, she started thinking and allowed the Devil to put doubts in her mind about what God said. When we start thinking and justifying things in our mind, we will fall just like Eve.
I Jn 2:16 Renames the things that the Devil got Eve thinking about: For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
-he tempted her physically and she wanted it! (the lust of the flesh) It looks good, I want it! I want it!
-he tempted her emotionally (the lust of the eyes) The eye is the gate to our emotions. What we see can cause us to love or hate immediately. We see things and think “I deserve better!” or “Why did that happen?” or “Why am I the only one around this house who does everything?”
-he tempted her spiritually (the pride of life). In Genesis it says a tree desired to make one wise. I can make faster, better decisions! I know what’s better for this church! I am smart! The devil gets us with our pride! It’s pride that we think our way is best.
Once the devil gets us in all three ways at the same time we are in trouble! Physically tired, emotionally drained, and disgusted by the way others do things...... Why bother!?? The devil has you! We need to fight the serpent in our lives!
